RESKINNING A STAIRCASE

RESKINNING A STAIRCASE
Every project, is a puzzle. A series of tasks that have multiple ways to execute. Including the choice of tools, the intrusive nature of the task, the time it takes to complete and the conditions under which the process is performed. All having a distinct impact on the end product.
This project was no different. First, the residents were home whereas many projects are done in vacant homes. Second, the project was the central and only access to the second floor. Third, there are up to five kids,  two adults and a dog, each using the stairway dozens of times a day. Fourth, cleanliness. The site had to be cleaned at intermediate points during the day and a final clean at day end. This was necessary for the simple reason that the dirt and dust tracked everywhere.
Also, the owners (customer) were both involved and somewhat unsure as to how the job should be done as well as its durability. This of course was compounded by cost considerations and a fast approaching holiday week.
In summary, we agreed to refurbish the steps with a direction that was more cost effective, making durability lower in importance but upon the creation of the first two prototype steps it was decided to change the direction to more durable materials. This had a large cost impact and also compressed the production time since one half the schedule was already exhausted on the first direction. Overall the result was a beautiful solution. At present, the steps are complete however the spindles and railing is under consideration for a replacement. This would eliminate the traditional wood spindles shown at the end in favor of 1/2' square rods.
The project is expected to resume after the holiday fallout.
